Barrack Obama USA and Mmusi Maimane DA Leader in South Africa - what a difference!

Mmusi Maimane is the new leader of the Democratic Alliance, having taken over from Helen Zille. The video is only 20 minutes but is well worth watching.

If he became president before I die, I will seriously think of returning home. He really is that impressive. Mind you, the way he spoke of Jacob Zuma, in front of him, he may not live as long as I might. A brave man, I hope he's hired a lot of bodyguards.

Watch in a quiet room without interruptions.

We are heading for an awful defeat (referendum)

The EU Referendum: Wake Me after the Defeat
by: Sean Gabb

Though I no longer read newspapers or watch television, I see the British Government has published its Bill for a referendum on our continued membership of the European Union. I suggest that anyone who believes in eventual withdrawal, and who sees a referendum as a means to that end, needs to have his head examined.

Let me explain.

First, my own belief in eventual withdrawal is tempered by an awareness of present benefits. I agree with Richard North that complaints about harmful regulation from Brussels are often misplaced. Much regulation comes via rather than from the European Union. A growing number of regulations – the Codex Alimentarius, for example, or further laws on money laundering – are agreed at a higher international level before being transmitted to Brussels for incorporation in Directives. If we left the European Union, perhaps we might have more control over the making of these regulations. Perhaps we might have more scope for quietly ignoring them. But leaving would not in itself free us from giving effect to these agreements in our own laws. This being said, the economic benefits of leaving may be overstated.

Turning to the present benefits of membership, there is no doubt that leaving would subject us to the unrestrained power of our own ruling class. Our constitutional arrangements have proved inadequate over the past century for the protection of our historic rights. The Judges are working hard to provide us with one. As yet, however, we still have no body of fundamental law that can be used to strike down incompatible Acts of Parliament. Therefore, if we want to stop the Government from turning the country into a freakish police state, we must look ultimately to the European Court and to the separate but associated European Court of Human Rights. I want eventually to leave the European Union – but not with our current political arrangements still in place.

Brexit and the Europeans

The Europeans, especially the Germans, have never understood the will of the English.

As an immigrant with English as my third language, I think I understand them, but only a little, but far more than most other races do.

You only have to look at the two world wars. Britain was hopelessly outnumbered but were the winners in both. I don't know a lot about WW1 but do about WW2. I know the numbers and firepower of the Americans were conducive of us winning when we did, but it was the resolve of the English, more even than the Scots,Welsh and Irish, which held this partnership of nations together.

The English have a really strong resolve to see things through, and if Brexit comes to pass, the English will knuckle down en masse, to make things work.

Our detractors are right, if we left, things will be tough at first, and those that say it could be another 2008 (when the bankers showed how corrupt they really are) could be right, but we'd pull through.

Our detractors also try to frighten us with threats of EU tariffs on our sales to the EU. But, when you consider we buy more than twice as much from them, all a tough Prime Minister would need to say is, OK, please feel free to put any tariff you want on our sales, but we'll put twice as much on our imports. Job done. Remember in Germany, they sell Mercedes, BMW, Audi cars to us, imagine their reaction of tariffs are even considered. And the French with their wine and cheese? We are their biggest world exports of wine.

"EU exposed" meeting in 2008 at the House of Lords

I attended this meeting, memory plays tricks as you grow old, as it feels like a decade longer than 2008!

Rodney Atkinson once stood for the UKIP leadership and is the brother of Mr Bean.

This is horrific and if you are pro the European Union, I would seriously suggest, for your peace of mind, that you didn't watch it as today is "be fair to a lefty" day.

This one is especially for my South African friends to help explain UKIP

UK Independence Party is not concerned with immigration. This is the biggest non-truth put out by our enemies.

We are concerned with not being allowed to control our borders. This is totally different to being concerned with immigration.

To allow anyone and his cat to come in from twenty-eight different countries, flooding schools, medical practices, hospitals, housing on a totally uncontrolled basis is simply not on.

Our country needs immigrants desperately, we have an ageing population and there are thousands of good jobs which can't be filled. The EU “open borders” policy has filled many of these but has also flooded the country with hundreds of thousands of manual labourers. These people work for below a liveable wage so that many of our workers have to be paid “make up wages” out of welfare so they can live. This is not good for family pride.
